On this day 21 years ago, I declared my freedom from the bondage of alcoholism. As days turned into weeks, months and years, I discovered that the abuse of alcohol which led me to the darkest of times was but a symptom of a deeper and spiritual issue. I had a hole in my heart that could only be filled by God. Attempting to fill it with alcohol and other mind-altering substances only caused the hole to grow deeper and wider. Through the love and compassion of those first in the ministry of Teen Challenge and then through the application and implementation of the Twelve Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous and more recently Celebrate Recovery, the God-shaped hole has been filled with the grace and mercy of my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
As I celebrate my 21st birthday I am reminded of the unconditional love of those who stood by me through all the heartache, pain and confusion. My best friend and wife Marsha, my two incredible sons, Cameron and Colin, my sponsors, mentors, spiritual advisors, colleagues and the many family and friends that recovery has gifted me with over the years. You have all been and continue to be the hands and feet of Jesus as He guides my steps through service to others and compassion for those still suffering.
God bless you all.
