SECRETS KILL

“Speak up son, we can’t hear you.” My Sponsor’s words used to ring in my ears every time I sat in a 12 Step support meeting. He believed that everyone had something to share and that as long as my lips were moving I wouldn’t have time to put a bottle in my mouth. Now I’m not completely convinced that a moving mouth can’t consume alcohol but one thing I know for sure is that secrets kill. As long as I am willing to keep my deepest darkest secrets to myself I am signing my death certificate.

The harms of yesterday, the dysfunction of today and the possibility of reoccurring behaviors in tomorrow are much less likely if we are transparent and allow ourselves to be vulnerable with each other.

People can see by the expressions on our face when we are keeping something to ourselves that needs to be brought into the light. Folks aren’t stupid and we need to remember those of us in recovery are pretty dog gone perceptive. If someone calls me on my bologna, then I’m probably full of bologna.

Are you keeping secrets?  If you are they are corroding you from within. You need to know that your secrets will eventually find you out. You can’t hid them forever. They have a sneaky way of coming to the service like a thorn in the flesh.

It is imperative that you find a trusting individual to share your secrets with. This can be difficult to do if you have been burned in the past, but I promise, your secrets will kill you if they are not exposed in the light of day.

So, what is that one thing that you believe if someone found out they would no longer love you, be your friend or want anything to do with you? That’s the thing that must be revealed. If not you are bond for the emotional grave and perhaps a relapse.

May I suggest the healing process of the Twelve Steps? The spiritual principles found in these Steps have literally saved the lives of thousands of secret holders.

Come join us in the fellowship of the His Spirit and begin the healing process today.

BUT MY SIDE OF THE STREET IS SO DIRTY!

I think that one of the reasons some of us attempt to clean the side of the street that belongs to someone else is because our side has become so dirty that it’s overwhelming to consider that we could possibly attend to the task of an honest self-appraisal.

Because we humans seem to have a built in need to fix things we will redirect our focus on another’s side of the street believing that if the other person’s side was cleaned up we would feel so much better about our own.
The truth is, this is a deception.  We will never be content with our side of the street until we dig in and go about the business of disinfecting our pavement with God’s grace and disciplines.

When we go about attempting to clean the other guys side, we only accumulate more dirt on to ours, consequently sinking deeper and deeper into the despair of filth.  The more dirt heaped onto our side of the street the scummier the other person’s appears to us so we try even harder to fix their sidewalk and the cycle continues until we are so deep in grunge that we can’t see the light of day.  All the while wondering what on earth happened.  We were only trying to help, right?

Is your sidewalk beginning to accumulate clutter?  Perhaps it’s because you are paying more attention to others character defects than your own.  It may be time to re-focus.  I need to re-focus daily.

FACING DIFFICULT DECISIONS

Today I made some difficult decisions that stirred my spirit deep within.  These decisions were not easy but they were much-needed and long in coming.  Each of us has either been faced with difficult decisions, are facing them now or will face them in the future.  When times like these cross our path we would do well to seek wise counsel, spend time in meditation and prayer and consider every option with an open mind and a willing heart.

Major decisions should never be taken lightly, but once we have made them it’s time to move on.

Many times moving on will be launched forth by a grieving process.  If that’s the case, by all means allow yourself to grieve.  Other times moving on requires a time of rest to clear our minds and allow our hearts to heal.  Still other forms of moving on will produce immediate action on our part as we transfer into a new season of our lives.

Where ever we fit into the change that decisions bring, we can be assured that God will never leave us nor forsake us.  He understands the pain of new seasons and he wants us to celebrate the beauty of new birth.

What decisions are you faced with today?  Are they difficult, painful and frightening?  Let me encourage you with this thought.

If we keep doing the very thing that isn’t working, we will continue to experience the very thing that isn’t working.

May God bless and direct your path in whatever you are facing today.

SO WE’RE SOBER, NOW WHAT?

OK, so we have finished our first formal working of the 12 Steps, now what?

I mean having had a spiritual awakening as a result of the Steps is one thing, but who cares if we are awake but are going nowhere?  What are we going to do with our new found freedom?  My challenge is that we become more than just awake.  We need to be more than simply aware of God, we need to be fully dependent upon Him.  If we are not depending on our creator, then who are we depending on?  The meetings, our Sponsor, other people, ourselves?  Did you know that many of us need much more than a Sponsor?  Sometimes we need a life coach, a mentor that is not in our 12 Step fellowship, but knows about things we have yet to learn.  Don’t cheat yourself out of learning more, experiencing more and engaging more, just because the “More” isn’t in your recovery group.  Remember, the 12 Steps are a foundation to build upon, not a complete end all solution.  There is no magical power in the Steps.  They are there to show us our need for a power.  Something to consider!
